Tülü is a transdisciplinary and collective project to create a work of art combining visual art and musical creation. It draws its inspiration from the philosophy and manufacturing techniques of a nomadic Turkish rug of the same name.
Time in a rug. Tülü is an evolutional and participative creation which stems from Pierre Redon’s aesthetic research in cartography and anthropology. With relation to the theme of birth, hair and drawings are collected aiming to weave a contemporary tülü. Each hair is a witness to our relationship with the environment, via our body. The toxins deposited in hair turn into sediments to become a sign of our life force or age. In the art installation, the drawings are placed on a central table and, at first, the hair collected sewn on felt shepherd capes that represent the seven continents. This ritual is an evocation of what has most probably given birth to the tülüs; at a time when shamans, during animist rituals, would don furry capes to embrace animalism. Once the collecting phase is completed and to weave this Tülü made of hair, the locks of hair are detached and inserted to the warp of the rug at the exact geographic coordinates of the donator’s place of birth. The drawings will serve as a background map for the rug. The musical piece, in its concert version or played during the exhibition as an accompaniment to the visual score, is based on the three-movement structure of the tülü related to nomadic philosophy. Likewise the rug, it is a condensed representation of this long temporality, intertwined to the body through hypnotic and repetitive movements, such as are required of the act of weaving.
