« For the past four years, I have studied the Greenland ice sheet through a camera lens. Or rather, I have studied those who study the ice: three of the world’s leading glaciologists, all striving to understand the scale and consequences of the climate crisis. They collect and analyze data which will help answer one of the most important questions of our time: how fast is the ice melting?
Most scientific climate research takes place via satellites, radar, and computer models. But that does not provide a complete picture. To properly understand the ice, one must go into the field. The scientists call this “ground truth.”
I have been taking these pictures while working on the documentary Into the Ice. What started as a documentation exercise turned into fascination and passion for the frozen still image of the ice. The peacefulness (or drama) is preserved, and we can even explore history, and find surprising harmonies or dramatic imbalances. Each image is accompanied by a sound: a QR code leads to the sound of the world that the image portrays. As the scientists point out: nature is trying to tell us something and we must listen. » Lars Henrik Ostenfeld
This exhibition invites the viewer on a journey into one of the most extreme landscapes on Earth, deep into the melting heart of climate change. My hope is that the images will make you curious and interested in following the important work of the scientists.
Into the Ice premieres at CPH:DOX, marts 2022.
