A BOOK OF DEDICATIONS
“Hurry up and pass it on”, said the tree before the lights went out, as the small
world rode together on the same road less travelled. A small world of two,
ample and mobile, with a taste for dedications. Is it an album? More like a book
of attentions, each the embodiment of dense inner relationships. Here the
tool they use is dedication. Indeed, a dedication is first and foremost a way of
opening up and tenderly embracing individual destinies and following them
up. A dedication is mineral, an unsegmented view of the years that follow the
initial memory, set to the rhythm of the nuances that blossom. A dedication
is a way to keep a work of art open. An open soul, with that old habit of
perceiving resistances that pose many challenges.
When the landscape calls itself to our thoughts, the flash and glow of
harrowing rites of brotherhood presage the comfort of elegant heists. Life is
not just a series of punctuations, and neither is the music on Dédicaces. Never
merely a vehicle for experience and rigid beliefs, it goes for the unexpected,
with the much-loved concision of this form of maturity, drawing from the
wide-ranging records of lives rich with intimate suggestions. There is no
fooling the pulse. Sylvain Kassap and Hélène Labarrière have assembled a
book of affinities, imbued with a character that fears neither day nor night, for
it knows its own half-lights as well as it does the imperceptible that suddenly
resounds with freedom.
The result is a dancing, confiding flow of ideas that mix together yet stand out,
with some pressing recommendations:
– the companion of so many joyous moments (she even saw Colargol the Bear
dance),
– the recording location, in Brittany’s black mountains, a hotbed of music and
history,
– nearly the oldest town in England, which in the Middle Ages inspired some
famous Tales and, more recently, spawned a musical school that quietly stood
apart from the prevailing pop canons of the day (let’s not forget that Hélène
Labarrière and Sylvain Kassap were Robert Wyatt’s guests),
– the little boy who had a hard time being born,
– the double bassist from Steve Lacy’s Dreams who went on to many more
musical encounters,
– the man murdered for trying to stop a world war from breaking out,
– the singer who honoured him and sang:
“Ask yourselves, you nice youth
Within the shadow of a memory
Within the heaving of a sigh”
With cheerful perseverance, the duo of Dédicaces share the breath of their
memories in an enduring simultaneity.
